Back in 1883 a group of 68 prominent locals held a meeting at the Brunswick Hotel in Brunswick Street Fitzroy with the express aim of putting a football team on the field and creating a club to represent the suburb of Fitzroy.
This meeting was chaired by former Fitzroy Mayor John McMahon who became what would be the new club's first president.
The club made an application in late 1883 for entry to the then top-flight Victorian Football Association (VFA) to take the field for the 1884 season which was duly accepted. Therein began the history of the great club we know and love 140 years later in 2023.
To begin our celebrations of this major milestone, the club has commissioned two very special commemorative historical guernseys.
The first is a beautiful replica of the Fitzroy guernsey first worn in the 1880s. It is predominantly maroon with a chamois shoulder and centre line. The lighter colour chamois is unique as it differs from the darker yellow guernsey that the club wore in its early VFL years from 1897. It features a recognition of the 140th anniversary on the front and the number 23 on the back of the guernsey to signify the year 2023.
The second guernsey is the wonderful Roys heritage guernsey in maroon and blue with the much loved white FFC logo. Underneath the logo is a special recognition of the 140th anniversary and also features the number 23 on the back. A further feature on the back of this guernsey is a beautiful watermark of the great Fitzroy triple Brownlow Medallist Haydn Bunton.
We have a small initial batch of both of these unique and historical guernseys available now for sale through our website for just $100.00 each.
Get in early and get yours now as they will undoubtedly sell out quickly.
